If you moved to Hill County in the last few years, you probably learned Hillsboro the way visitors do: one festival at a time. Churrofest one weekend, Bond's Alley the next, a lighted parade in December. That version of downtown is real, but it is not how people who have lived here a while actually use the square.
The people who have been here a while use a loop. The same loop, most Saturdays, from the first week of May until the last week of October. The festivals are just louder weekends inside that loop. Once you see the shape of it, the whole year suddenly plans itself.
The loop starts at the 1890 courthouse.
